iPhone 2.0 jailbroken and a bit ermmm dissapointing

Along with probably hundreds of thousands of iPhone 2g users, i’ve been waiting patiently for the dev-team to release the 2.0 pwnage tool so that I could upgrade my iPhone to the latest operating system

The annoucement of the appstore has had me a bit too excited for months

So the tool finally came out yesterday, so I hurridly downloaded it and loaded it up

Firstly, massive respect to the iphone-dev lads who I believe had 2.0 cracked before it even went live
However.. the pwnage 2.0 tool is awful. Lots of “web 2.0″ style graphics, and lolcats style error messages means its virtually unuseable
A nice help system or meaningful error messages would have been much nicer

So after spending 30minutes looking repeatedly at the “failed to get into DFU mode” error, I just alt-clicked restore in iTunes, pointed it at the new .ipsw file that pwnage had created, and it worked a treat

Updated the bootloader and baseband bits and pieces at the same time

HOWEVER, this is where the good news ends!

The appstore…. lovely idea, free marketing and distribution system for developers
However Apple have been way too paranoid. They wont allow background processes.

This means no MMS system, and even if there was it wouldnt be able to notify you of new messages, you’d have to open it up all the time to check
Last.fm cant scrobble what you play in the iPod part of the iPhone because it cant stay resident in memory while another application runs

Hrmmm, so what we mostly have is a few apps that feel unfinished, and an absolute sh*t load of games!

Then it gets worse… there’s still no copy+paste, such a basic function that its making the iPhone nearly impossible to use. All these lovely new apps come out but I cant even paste a link into an email to my friend??

There’s also no installer.app for 2.0 yet, and all my old applications now no longer work as they need re-writing in 2.0 *sigh*

So I have no horizontal keyboard in texts, no copy+paste, no MMS, no video recorder, still a sh*t camera app… and ive lost my summer board theme, and all my old applications

I must admit today im sitting wondering if i’d be better off rolling back to my 1.1.4 restore point

Apple… pull your finger out, it would take like a day to write an MMS apps, theres even a youtube video showing how the copy+paste functionality could work…!

*UPDATE* it would appear im not the only one to have those problems with the pwnage 2.0 tool… so 2.01 has just been released. Check out the iphone-dev blog for more info
